Heave Ho

Heave Ho
I cut the ribbon
That was tangled in my hair
And I was free from the person
Who said they liked it there
Then I littered in the gutter
And slipped it through the grating
Into the dark city water
Full of flotsam downstream waiting
I cut the twine
Wrapped around a shiny box
That held the gift that I’d been given
a joyless paradox
to keep it is to knot up
or to fray at every edge
to hold on means to slip off
and be alone instead
well it’s more than I had wanted to let go
cast off, slip stitches, just so
I broke the bottle
That launched a thousand ships
They were full of teary cargo
But unloaded all of it
And stacked on the docks
Are the trunks and all the luggage
Stow it soon, stevedores
I will wave my farewell hanky from the shore
Though it’s more than I had wanted to let go
May I never hear a call out - land ho
Light cannot make it
To the Mariana Trench
Still some garbage must be glowing
Deep within the ocean’s depths
But what I’ve tossed out will be broken down
Into degrading bits
For no solid thing was ever there
And I know not to wish for permanence
And it’s more than I had wanted to let go
Hoist up, deep six it, heave ho

The Golden Mountain

The Golden Mountain
My love lives way up on the mountain
way up on the golden mountain
my love lives way up on the mountain
and I don’t think I’ll see him anymore.
I’ll never go back up that mountain
the winding way where I can’t stay
no I’ll never go back up that mountain
and I don’t think I’ll see him anymore
Have you ever heard a lonesome owl cry
high above a city night
have you ever heard a lonesome owl cry
well I don’t think I’ll hear that anymore
That’s cuz my love lives way up on the mountain
way up on the golden mountain
my love lives way up on the mountain
and I don’t think I’ll see him anymore
Last night I dreamed of western canyons
and there we walked hand in hand
last night I dreamed of western canyons
and I don’t think I’ll see him anymore
I’ll live my life here in the flatlands
working hard doing the best I can
I’ll live my life here in the flat lands
and I don’t think I’ll see him anymore
My love lives way up on the mountain
way up on the golden mountain
my love lives way up on the mountain
and I don’t think I’ll see him anymore

Seated in the Valley
03:18
|

See the man in tall pale reeds there
a good man in a stand of water
tall hair cat tails
not there at all
He’ll join us in patter and laughter
as a skimming stone that got faster
and we’ll stretch the ripples to the shore
Last year he made it up those stairs
and we sat around on these hard chairs
and we played with the phases of the tune
Now how deep does his low go
he’s the bottom of our high pitched solos
from his seat in the valley of the moon
and the waves
of the stereo
sing out sounds
he loves so well
oh God
is this really going to be another
open ended odd farewell
When two gather in their names
hear a chuckle just beyond the doorway
see the gold lamp dampen down the room
Every joke smart and fleeting
let’s rip it up for the quizzical beings
in their seats in the valley of the moon

Farewell Again

Farewell Again
Farewell Again
May this put a stop to saying this my friend
Farewell Again
May the story cease its looping and just end
Farewell again
Not one more tear
Let the water cycle be the sea and clouds
not one more tear
tell the great rain maker, I want out
I want out
Now there’s a man
who cannot stand
to see the closing curtains of the act descend
and goes at it ever harder
pulls them back again
back again
not again
what’s a promise ever meant to do
not again
but bind us to a dream
we wish were true
not again
For he’s a man...
He cannot change
wisdom’s loaded in this sad refrain
he cannot change
who will hold this cue card when I fail
I will not fail
I will put a stop to saying this my friends
the story ceased its looping and just ends
Farewell again
